Sitting Down TogetherRomans 12:18

The Place I Still Set

This message is for a place at your table that has belonged to somebody since before the split, and the ache of not knowing whether you are allowed to keep setting it

She sets six places and there are five of them.

She has done it every Sunday for four years. Plate, glass, knife, fork, the folded cloth napkin that only comes out on a Sunday, all of it laid at the far end where he has sat since he was nine years old and had to kneel up to reach.

Nobody in the house asks about it any more. They did at the start. Her daughter asked outright, the first winter, in the flat way that seventeen asks things: is he actually coming, or are we doing this.

She said, I do not think he is coming. And then, after a moment, because it was the truest thing she had: he is still my brother and it is still his chair.

The split was in a crematorium car park. Their father had been the reason the whole family gathered anywhere at all, and eleven days after they buried him her brother said a sentence about the house and she said a sentence about their mother and the two sentences met in the middle and took everything down with them.

She could tell you both sentences word for word. So could he. That is the trouble with the sentences.

Four years. Two Christmases where somebody sent a message and neither of them answered it properly. One near miss at a wedding, where they saw each other across a room and both moved.

And every Sunday, the plate.

She has never once phoned him about it. She will tell you, if you press her, that she does not think it is hers to do, and that she is not sure whether keeping the place laid is faithfulness or whether it is a woman refusing to accept a fact. She has gone round that question so many times that it has worn a groove.

You know this house.

Maybe there is a chair in yours. Maybe the reader is the one not coming, and somebody's Sunday has a gap in it with a familiar name on, known for years, sitting on the chest.

Maybe the split was not a car park. Maybe it was a vestry, or a will, or a phone call at two in the morning, or a slow drift that nobody said out loud until it was already finished.

And maybe what nobody has ever told you is whether you are allowed to keep setting the place.

The Place I Still Set

Nobody is summoned

Let me say the hard part first, because everything else is worthless without it.

The place being set is not a promise that he comes.

This page cannot tell you he will walk in. Nobody can, and anybody who does is selling you something at your own kitchen table. Some chairs stay empty for a very long time. Some stay empty for good. That is a real grief and it deserves to be called one rather than dressed up as a season of waiting.

And there is something else that has to be said just as plainly, because there are people reading this for whom it is the whole thing.

You are not being told to make contact, and nothing on this page treats a distance you have kept as a failure of yours. Romans 12:18 says if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men, and it writes both limits into the sentence rather than issuing a bare command, and it is the same Spirit who gives wisdom to anybody who asks for it.

Not today, not by this page, not by anybody who does not know what happened in your family. There are rooms it is not safe to walk back into, and there are people whose absence from your table is the reason you have a table at all. If that is you, nothing here is aimed at your phone. Stay exactly where you are.

So what is the place for?

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.Romans 12:18

Sit with how carefully that is built.

If it is possible. Paul has already conceded, in the first three words, that sometimes it is not. He does not treat that as a failure of somebody's faith. He writes it into the instruction, because he knew what families are.

As far as it depends on you, and not one inch further, because you are not being asked to produce an outcome that lives inside another person. Romans 12:18 draws the boundary inside the instruction itself rather than leaving it to be inferred, and it is the same Spirit who bears witness with your spirit, which means nobody is holding you responsible for what only they can do.

Live at peace. Which is present tense, and which is something you can be doing right now, at a table where five people are eating and one chair is empty.

Do you see what that verse quietly takes off you?

It takes the whole weight of the result off you, and the low steady verdict underneath the grief is not in the verse. Romans 12:18 concedes in its first three words that peace is sometimes not possible and never once calls that a failure of anybody’s faith, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept both limits in writing, which means four years of an empty chair is not a mark against you and setting it is not denial. What is in the verse is a boundary drawn in your favor by God Himself, and the boundary runs at the edge of what is yours.

The plate is yours. The chair is yours. The Sunday is yours.

He is not yours, he was never meant to be, and you were never the one holding the whole thing together. Romans 12:18 hands you your own side of the line and stops there, and it is the same Spirit who bears witness with your spirit, which means the part of this that lives inside another person has never been on your account. Your father was, and then he was not, and the ground went out from under all of you at once.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is quieter than you were expecting.

You are not waiting for him. You are keeping something true. Romans 12:18 puts living at peace in the present tense and locates it entirely on your side of the line, and it is the same Spirit who is called the Comforter, which means a plate laid on Sunday is a thing being done rather than a result being awaited.

The plate is not a summons and it is not a strategy and it is not a woman who cannot accept a fact. It is a witness, laid out in china once a week, that says: whatever was said in that car park, this person exists, this person is mine, and there is a place at my table with his shape in it.

That is not you refusing reality, it is you refusing to let the worst eleven days of your life do the final editing on your family. Psalm 23:5 says thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies and lays it inside a situation that had not resolved, and it is the same Spirit who is called the Comforter, which means the china on that table is a witness and not a denial.

And if the reader is the one in the chair, the one not coming, then hear the other half of it. Somewhere, possibly, a place has been kept. Nothing here asks for a move toward it, nobody is owed a return, and no page can weigh what is being weighed. But being missed is not the same as being demanded, and that a table can hold a place for you without ever calling your name.

The table is set. Nobody is being summoned. Both of those are true at once, and God has been sitting at it the whole time.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these standing in a place given to you in Christ rather than earned. The authority is His, delegated, and the outcome and its timing stay His to decide. Nothing here commands another person. Say what is true, and leave the rest with Him. However He answers and whatever He does with that empty chair, the outcome is His and not a measure of you.

  1. Fourth year of Sundays, you are not my verdict and you do not get to close this table. Romans 12 says if it be possible, as much as lieth in me, live peaceably with all men, and the Holy Spirit wrote both limits into the sentence rather than leaving them to be guessed at. As far as it depends on me, this place stays laid.
  2. Weight of a result that was never mine, in the name of Jesus you come off this table tonight. The word says as much as lieth in you and stops the sentence there, and His Spirit bears witness with my spirit. I set what is mine to set and I leave in His hands what was never mine to arrange.
  3. Christ, You are the peace between us whether or not that chair ever fills. Your word says Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies, and Your Spirit is the Comforter. I am held at a table You laid long before I laid mine.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
