Building With What Is LeftNehemiah 4:6

A Week With A Shape In It Again

This message is for the mother trying to rebuild an ordinary week for her children after a year that took the shape out of everything, who cannot manage a whole week and has therefore not managed any of it

There used to be a shape to it and everybody in that house knew the shape without anybody writing it down.

Tuesday was the swimming. Thursday was her mother's, which meant the good biscuits and the same three questions. Friday there was something on the table that counted as a thing, and it was not elaborate and it did not need to be, and the children could have told you on a Monday what Friday was going to look like.

A year came through the house and took the lot.

It does not matter for this what the year was. Something happened, and then something else happened on top of it, and by about the fourth month everything that was not strictly necessary had quietly stopped, which is what happens, and nobody decided it.

Nobody complained. Nobody said anything. That is somehow the worst part.

Her eldest asked her what day it was, on a Saturday, about a fortnight ago.

She was not joking. She is eleven and she genuinely did not know, because there is nothing in the week any more that tells you where you are in it.

Here is what she has not said out loud to another adult.

She has tried to put it back. She has sat down at that table with a pen and a piece of paper three separate times, and every time she has got as far as Wednesday and it has already gone wrong, because a real week has to survive contact with a Thursday that is not going to cooperate.

And every time, she has put the pen down.

So there have been three attempts and three pieces of paper and not one thing has changed, and she is the one in that house who is supposed to know how a week goes.

If your week lost its shape, sit down and have some toast. Nobody at this table needs you to have a plan.

A Week With A Shape In It Again

The verse that writes down the half

There is a line in Nehemiah, in the middle of a rebuild that was going badly and being mocked from the outside, and it records something most people would be embarrassed to record.

So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.Nehemiah 4:6

Unto the half thereof.

They wrote down the half. Not the finished wall. Not a wall you could defend a city with. A wall that had got to about halfway up, which is a wall that does not yet do the job a wall exists to do, and somebody thought that was worth putting in a book.

And the reason given is not resources or favorable conditions. The people had a mind to work.

You are permitted to build to the half and to have the half counted. Nehemiah 4:6 records a wall joined together unto the half as a genuine stage of the work rather than as a shortfall, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept that measurement in the record, which means a Tuesday with one thing back in it is a real stage of a week and not a failed attempt at one.

Why the pen keeps going down

Now the three pieces of paper, because there is a mechanism here and it is worth naming.

Every time you sit down, you try to build a week.

A week is a system. It has seven parts and they all have to hold together, and the whole thing has to survive things you cannot predict, and it has to be sustainable, and it has to be the sort of week a competent mother runs.

Nobody could build that from a standing start on a Sunday evening with a pen.

You have been trying to construct the whole thing at once, and no builder in Scripture has ever been asked to do that. Nehemiah 4:6 has the wall going up in stages with people working on the piece in front of them, and it is the Spirit of God who puts a mind to work in a person, which means the unit that is actually available to you is a Tuesday and not a week.

The pen is not the problem and neither is your competence. The unit is wrong, and it has been wrong three times.

What the eleven year old actually asked

Here is what has been sitting on you since that Saturday, and it deserves to be looked at straight rather than at two in the morning.

She did not know what day it was.

That felt like evidence. It felt like proof of something about the last year and about the person running the house.

You were not being reported on by that question, and a child asking what day it is has never once been a verdict on her mother. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench, and it is written of God's handling of things that have been through something rather than of His assessment of them, and it is the same Spirit who is called the Comforter, which means whatever that Saturday was, it was not a judgment being handed down.

What she asked for, without knowing she was asking, is one thing that happens reliably. Not a week. One thing.

The breakthrough

Something is available at this table and it is not a week.

You have permission to build a half and to have it recorded as building. Nehemiah 4:6 writes down a wall that had reached half its height and calls it built, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept the half in the record rather than waiting for the finished thing, which means one reliable Tuesday is not a scaled-down version of what is needed. It is the thing itself, at the stage it is at.

Nobody is asking you to fix the week. Nobody is asking you to explain the year to anybody, or to get the swimming back, or to be a woman who runs a household the way you did before.

There is one thing on offer and it is deliberately too small to fail.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these standing in a place given to you in Christ rather than earned. The authority is His, delegated, and the outcome and its timing stay His to decide. Say what is true, and leave the rest with Him.

  1. Whole week I cannot rebuild, you are not the unit and you never were. Nehemiah 4 says so built we the wall, and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof, for the people had a mind to work, and the Holy Spirit kept the half in the verse as a real stage of a real wall. I am building with what is left, it is not enough, and my hands are on it today.
  2. Verdict I read into a question on a Saturday, in the name of Jesus you are put out of this kitchen. The word says a bruised reed shall He not break and the smoking flax shall He not quench, and His Spirit is the Comforter and not the inspector. Fifteen minutes today is a beginning.
  3. Lord, You had the half of a wall written down in Your own book and You called it built. Your word says who hath despised the day of small things, and Your Spirit is the one who puts a mind to work in a house. I am putting one thing back into a Tuesday, and I am not planning the rest of the week.
