Sitting Down Together2 Samuel 9:7

Nobody Says Whose Place It Is

This message is for the reader whose family has kept the empty chair for years while an unspoken rule keeps anybody from saying the name out loud, so a whole household lives around a silence nobody chose

There is a place laid at the end of that table and every person sitting at it knows whose it is.

It has been laid every Sunday for as long as the small ones can remember. Bowl, glass, the same chair.

And not one person has said that name out loud at that table in years.

Nobody decided this. That is the strange part and it is the part worth looking at.

There was no meeting. Nobody announced a rule. It simply became the way that table works, the way a path forms across a field because enough people walked around the same puddle.

A cousin nearly said it in July.

She got about halfway into the name and stopped, and the whole table heard the stopping. Every single person. And then somebody asked about the roof, and the entire family went to the roof gratefully and stayed there for twenty minutes.

And one of them lay awake that night thinking about how fast they had all moved.

Because here is what has happened, and it is worth naming even though nobody at that table would put it this way.

The silence has become a member of the family. It gets a seat. It gets accommodated. Everyone works around it and nobody chose it and it has more authority at that table than any living person there.

Pull up a bench under the awning. There is plenty in the pot and nothing has to be said out here.

Nobody Says Whose Place It Is

A king says a name

There is a scene in Scripture where a king goes looking for somebody from a family that everybody had good reason never to mention again.

The house of Saul had been the enemy. The man he found was Jonathan's son, crippled in both feet, living in a place whose name means barren.

And the king said this to him.

Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.2 Samuel 9:7

Read what he did there.

He said Jonathan out loud. He said Saul out loud, at a royal table, in front of officials, about a family that the room had spent years not mentioning.

He did not make a speech about it. He did not explain himself. He said the name in an ordinary sentence, the way you say a name, and then he told the man to come and eat.

And notice: the crippling was not fixed. The man had ruined feet before that sentence and ruined feet after it. What changed was that he had a seat and his father had a name.

You are looking at a Scripture where the unsayable name gets said at a table without a scene being made of it. 2 Samuel 9:7 has a king speak Jonathan and Saul aloud in a room that had every reason to avoid both, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept the names in the sentence rather than editing them to titles, which means saying a name out loud at your own table has precedent at the highest level.

What the silence is actually doing

Let us be fair to that table, because those are not cowardly people.

The silence started as kindness. Somebody was hurting and a name was raw, and everybody protected them by going around it, and that was the right call at the time.

But protection that runs for years stops being protection and becomes architecture.

What it costs is this. The children growing up at that table are learning that this person is not a person but a hazard. And the one who is hurting most is now the only one who cannot mention them, because the whole family has arranged itself so that mentioning them would be an event.

You have been living inside a kindness that hardened into a rule, and the rule now costs more than the thing it was protecting anybody from. Ecclesiastes 3:7 says there is a time to keep silence, and a time to speak, and it puts both under a season rather than making either permanent, and it is the same Spirit who gives wisdom to anybody who asks for it, which means a silence that made sense four years ago is allowed to end.

Nobody is being summoned

Let us be plain about the size of what is being suggested here.

Nobody is telling anybody to contact that person. Nothing in this article asks that table to arrange anything, invite anybody, or reopen a decision.

This is about a name being sayable in a room, and nothing else. The person concerned will never know it happened.

You are not being instructed to reach anybody, and years of distance are not being counted against this family. Romans 12:18 says if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men, and it writes both limits into one short sentence, and it is the same Spirit who bears witness with your spirit, which means what has been possible for this household is already accounted for.

The breakthrough

Something is available at that table and it is not a reunion.

You are able to say a name out loud in an ordinary sentence, and Scripture shows a king doing exactly that at his own table. 2 Samuel 9:7 puts Jonathan and Saul in a king's mouth in front of a room that had avoided both, and it is the Holy Spirit who preserved the names rather than the avoidance, which means the rule at your table was never a law and nobody at it ever agreed to it.

Nobody is asking for a speech, an announcement, or a family meeting. Those would make the silence important, and the whole point is that it is not.

There is one thing on offer and it takes about four seconds on a Sunday.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these standing in a place given to you in Christ rather than earned. The authority is His, delegated, and the outcome and its timing stay His to decide. Say what is true, and leave the rest with Him.

  1. Rule in this house that nobody agreed to and nobody breaks, you are not a law and you have run this table for years. 2 Samuel 9 has a king say a name out loud and put the man at his own table, and the Holy Spirit kept the name in the sentence rather than the silence. I am coming back to this table, not because it is settled, but because we are still theirs and His.
  2. Fear of what four seconds of quiet would do to this family, in the name of Jesus you are smaller than you have been. The word says there is a time to keep silence, and a time to speak, and it puts both under a season rather than making either permanent, and His Spirit gives wisdom to anybody who asks. The season for that silence is over.
  3. Lord, You had a king say Jonathan out loud in front of his whole court and then hand a crippled man a seat. Your word says Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies, and Your Spirit is the Comforter. On Sunday that name gets said at this table in an ordinary sentence.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
