He Knows Exactly What Is Missing

He has the drawings. That is where this starts and it is the whole of the problem.

He knows how it was built the first time. Not vaguely, not from stories. He has the actual measurements, the notes, the record of who did what and with what, and he has read every page of it more than once because that is what he does.

Which means he is the only person in that room who can itemize the gap.

Not estimate it. Itemize it. He could give you the list in order, with quantities, and every item on it is a thing they do not have and are not going to have.

The others are ready to start on Saturday.

They are not fools. They simply do not know what he knows, and so what they see is a job that will be hard and a group of people who are willing, and that combination looks to them like a reason to get the van.

And they are grateful for him. That is the part that has begun to sit badly. They say things like, good thing we have got him, and they mean it warmly, and they think what he is doing is being careful.

Here is what he has not said to any of them.

He is not being careful. He is standing still.

He has not lifted a hand toward that job in eight months, and every week he produces another reason that is accurate, and every reason is genuinely true, and the accumulated effect of eight months of true reasons is a site with nothing on it.

If what you know is the thing keeping you still, pull up a chair. There is coffee and nobody here is going to ask you for your assessment.

What God said to people looking at exactly that gap

There is a moment in Haggai where God speaks directly to a group of people who are standing in front of a rebuild and can see precisely how far short of the first version it is going to fall.

He has just asked them, two verses earlier, who is left among them that saw the first house in her glory, and how do they see this one now, and is it not in their eyes as nothing.

And then this.

Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts: according to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.Haggai 2:4-5

He does not correct their arithmetic. He does not tell them the comparison is unfair, or that the second one will be just as good, or that they are being negative.

He agrees with the measurement and then says work.

You are being told to work by somebody who has already conceded the size of the gap. Haggai 2:3 asks how the people see it now and calls it as nothing in their eyes, and Haggai 2:4 says be strong and work anyway, and it is the Holy Spirit who is named in the very next verse as the one who remained among them, which means your itemized list is not being argued with and it is also not being accepted as a reason to stand still.

What the knowledge is actually doing

Now the notebook, because it deserves better than being called a hiding place, and it is one.

The knowledge is real and it is valuable. When that job finally moves, the fact that one person in the room has the original measurements will save them a year.

But knowledge does a second thing that expertise rarely admits to. It makes the gap precise, and a precise gap is far more paralyzing than a vague one. The others can start on Saturday partly because they cannot see what you can see. You are not more responsible than them. You are more informed, and information has a weight, and you have been carrying it alone for eight months.

You have been immobilized by accuracy rather than by fear, and Scripture has never once treated a clear-eyed man as disqualified. Luke 14:28 has Christ commending the man who sits down first and counts the cost, and it is written as wisdom rather than as a warning against counting, and it is the same Spirit who leads into all truth, which means the counting was right and the stopping is a separate decision that has not been examined.

What they are actually grateful for

Here is the thing that has started to sit badly, and it should be said plainly.

They think you are being careful. You know you are standing still. That gap between what they see and what is happening is the real weight, and it is heavier than the job.

You were not deceiving anybody, and eight months of true reasons is not the same as a lie. Psalm 139:23 says search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, and know my thoughts, and it is written by somebody inviting the examination rather than dreading it, and it is the same Spirit who searches the deep things, which means the discomfort you have been carrying is conscience working properly and not evidence against you.
